Your help is desperately needed.

The budget news is bad and getting worse. The State Library started the year with a 2.5% reduction and recently received a 3% reduction. Given the economy, I suspect it will be a while before we see the possibility of a budget increase. We would be foolish to wait on that good news. It is time to begin working on improving how we are currently funded.

Most of you understand that libraries are needed most when the economy is at its worst. As entertainment budgets decrease, families will take greater advantage of library resources. On a downward economic cycle, libraries become important elements of economic recovery as the unemployed seek help with resumes, job searches, job applications and work skills improvement.

The State Library, in partnership with the SC Association of Public Library Administrators, is in the process of developing a statewide advocacy campaign. We understand that libraries must deliver a very clear message, consistently and constantly across a broad audience of library supporters and potential supporters. If you are reading this you are one who is interested in the future of South Carolina Libraries. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for information about the new library advocacy campaign and please be prepared to help.
